The Humphrey Clinic is a marriage and family therapy research and training clinic which is student staffed, specializing in systemic individual, couple and family treatment.  The clinic is available to the UCONN student population and the surrounding community.   In addition to overseeing the operation of the clinic, Denise teaches first year practicum, which involves live supervisory observation with a consultative reflection team and provides clinical supervision. Denise also oversees external internships for graduate students at the Humphrey Clinic, and maintains relationships with agency sites across Connecticut for student placements.

Currently Denise is working with legislative efforts and advocacy for family-based treatment in the state of Connecticut.  She has worked to build interdisciplinary relationships for MFTs and coordinated efforts across states to ensure that MFTs have a strong systemic position in the behavioral health network.

January 2002-May 2012, Stratford Community Services/Town of Stratford Youth Service Bureau, CT, Clinical Coordinator

Denise oversaw clinical youth and family therapy programs for residents of the town of Stratford CT.  This included working with schools and family resource center educators, social work, youth development and psychology staff at multiple locations.  Denise also oversaw the operation of the Juvenile Review Board, participated on the Greater Bridgeport juvenile justice task force, facilitated youth development activities, supervised social service case management, all clinical staff, family therapy interns, and provided individual/family therapy to 7-10 families weekly. Community Services averaged 150-200 family therapy cases per year.

Teaching

September 1998-May 2008, Counseling Graduate Education NJTAG program, Fairfield University  Taught weekend CEU courses for teacher/school counselor 6th year credits (Domestic Violence, Conflict Resolution, Youth Development, Crisis Intervention, Family Dynamics) offered to NY/NJ Educators and school counselors.

Marriage and Family Therapy Program, Fairfield University  Supervised Fairfield University Marriage and Family Therapy clinical practicum 2005-2006 while permanent faculty search was conducted.

Victim Services

September 1993-September 1998, Domestic Violence Services/Stamford, CT, Program Coordinator

Denise oversaw and supervised all crisis services for two 24 hour domestic violence/sexual assault program located in Bridgeport CT (Center for Women & Families averaged 3,000 cases per year) and in Stamford, CT (Domestic Violence Crisis Center averaged 1500 cases per year).  Services included emergency shelter for women and children, crisis counseling, support groups, court-based victim advocacy, multi-disciplinary investigative team coordination, women’s prison release programming, volunteer certification training and domestic violence and sexual assault prevention and education programs.  Denise assisted with conceptualizing and implementing grants in her role in Bridgeport. While in Stamford, Denise participated in  collaborations with St. Luke’s homeless shelter, Liberation Programs substance abuse programs and carried a caseload of 15-20 cases per week.  In both organizations, she was responsible for supervision and training of staff and volunteers.

Denise began her career in human services as a volunteer, running women’s and children’s support groups 1990-1993.
