Thomas W. Miller
Thomas W. Miller Ph.D. ABPP is a professor within the department of Health Promotion Allied Health Science Applied Health Sciences at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Miller earned his Ph.D. at State University of New York- Buffalo. His primary research interests include trauma in children, adolescents, adults, and elderly; cultural issues in health behaviors; influence of spiritual and religious beliefs on health practices; use of telemedicine in serving minorities and underserved populations.
Specifically, Dr. Miller's work relates to the mission of the Center in that the research related to health disparities and influence of religious and spiritual beliefs on health practices and behavior address all three of the key concepts that bring this center together culture, health and human development. Promoting health in multicultural populations is of significant interest and the focus of work with the Tlingit Indians- a Native American group whose core spiritual beliefs directly influence their health behaviors. Telemedicine applications for underserved populations address clinical services provided to the Latino patient with HIV. The use of the telemedicine applications provides for greater spectrum of services and contacts with this patient population and focuses on adherence and compliance issues in treatment and management of their disease.
Currently, Dr. Miller is working on the following projects: Self-concept changes from Genetic Testing- NIH Ethical Legal and Social Implications of Human Genetics and Genome Research, Exercise, weight loss, skeletal & metabolic health in older women- NIH PA 01017 Physical Activity and Obesity Across chronic diseases, Telehealth Clinical Consultation to At Risk HIV+ Patients (Pilot), Spirituality in an Alaskan Native Alcohol Treatment Program.
