Nancy Caroline (Bender) Bates '53 (1931-2006)
CHESHIRE, Conn.: Mrs. Nancy Caroline (Bender) Bates, 75, wife of 53 years of John Bates, of 366 Jinny Hill Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2006, at home after a long illness. Mrs. Bates was born Dec. 10, 1931, in Waterbury, a daughter of the late Adolf and Mathilde (Hock) Bender. She was a retired teacher having taught in Meriden and Cheshire schools, and was the director and a teacher for 30 years at the Good Shepherd Nursery School in Mount Carmel. She was a member and former deacon of the First Congregational Church of Cheshire, where she was also a member of the choir and bell choir, taught Sunday School and served on the music committee. She was a member of the Cheshire Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for 35 years, a 4-H leader for 10 years and a past master of the Cheshire Grange 23. Mrs. Bates had also taught a quilting class in Prospect for 15 years, and exhibited her hand-quilted bedspreads in local fairs and at the Big E. Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, John Bates III and his wife, Jean L. Bates, of Washington, N.H.; a daughter, Jill B. Stronk and her husband, William J. Stronk, of Cheshire; a sister, Barbara Dreher of Ohio; a sister-in- law, Alta M. Bates Paine of Massachusetts; five granddaughters, Kimberlee Ann (Bates) Ilardi, Jenny A. Stronk, Jillian R. Stronk, Elizabeth L. Bates and Hether Larivee. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 15, at First Congregational Church of Cheshire. Family and friends are asked to meet directly at the church at 10:45 a.m. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Cheshire. Ruth (Tyler) Bean, '33 (1911-2008)
Ruth Tyler Bean, 96, of Lewiston, Maine, died peacefully on Sunday, January 27, 2008. Mrs. Bean was born September 16, 1911, in Plainville, Connecticut, a daughter of Helen (Styring) and Henry St. John Tyler. She graduated from Plainville High School in 1929 and from Connecticut State College in 1933 with a degree in dietetics. She was employed as head dietitian at Yale University and at Woodrow Wilson High School in Middletown, Connecticut, until her marriage on September 11, 1937, to Arthur Insley Bean of Springfield. She made her home in Springfield for 66 years. She was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Springfield, serving as church clerk for many years. She was active in University Extension Homemakers and the Altrurian, Garden, Quilters and Needlecraft clubs. She served as a Girl Scouts leader on both the local and state levels and volunteered in the community. She had a deep intellectual and spiritual life and loved traveling, genealogy, reading, and doing needlework. She was dedicated to her family. As a lifelong learner, she attended Elderhostels every year for 25 years. In 2002 she moved to Auburn, Maine, and became part of Schooner Estates retirement community and a member of High Street Congregational Church. Survivors include her sister Olive (Tyler) Garrigus (HE '41) of Urbana, Illinois; her sons Tyler Bean and his wife, Marie, of Orleans and Donald Bean and his wife, Karen, of Bethel, Maine; her daughters Mary Bloom and her husband, Stephen, of Falmouth, Maine, and Emily Tocci and her husband, Gregory, of Orleans; eight grandchildren: Jennifer Bartlau, Gregory Bean, Sarah Zima, Peter Bloom, Nathan Bean, Matthew Bean, Helen Tocci, and Anna Maria Tocci and their spouses; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, in April 1985; and by her three brothers. A memorial service honoring her life will be held Saturday, February 9, at noon at High Street Congregational Church. Ann (Miller) O'Malia Brundage '76 (1951-2007)
FREDONIA, Pa.: Ann O'Malia Brundage, 56, passed away peacefully in her sleep Thursday, Dec. 20, 2007, at UPMC Horizon Greenville, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Hartford, Conn., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Margaret Carney Brundage. She lived overseas much of her life due to her father's job with the State Department, but she returned and graduated with a Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Connecticut. She was an officer in the Reynolds Academic Boosters Club, member of Raiders Against Drugs, and a volunteer in the schools. Ann was a member of Fredonia United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school for many years. She is survived by her husband, Frank O'Malia; sons, Carl (Molly) O'Malia Brundage of Allentown, Pa., and Ryan O'Malia Brundage of Fredonia; daughters, Kathleen O'Malia Brundage of Warrington, Pa., Megan O'Malia Brundage of Fredonia, Kelly (Erick Eckstein) O'Malia of Rock Creek, Marne (Tony) O'Malia Cario, and their children, Benjamin and Gabriella of Girard; her sisters, Diane (John) Brundage Ray of Alexandria, Va., Joyce Brundage of Springfield, Va., Mary (Benny) Brundage Wetzler of Chantilly, Va., and Janet Brundage of Reston, Va. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the church with the Rev. Christine Groeger officiating. The Committal Service and interment will follow at the Millbank Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Robert L. Snyder Funeral Home, Ltd. 169 Second St., Fredonia. Jean E. (Barnes) Burr '42 (1920-2008)
DENNIS, Mass.: Jean Elizabeth (Barnes) Burr, 87, died at Mass General Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008. She was born on Sept. 10, 1920, in Greenwich, Conn. Jean met her late husband, Walter, at the University of Connecticut. They were married for 62 years. She graduated in 1942, with a bachelor's degree in foods and nutrition. She was head of the Records Department, the Registrar of the University, at UConn before retiring to Dennis with Walter in 1973. Jean became active in the Barnstable Chapter of the Hospital Auxiliary, St. Mary's Episcopal Church and the Dennis Garden Club. She especially loved to cook, play bridge, golf and take long walks. Jean leaves her daughter, Karen Bolles, and her husband, Richard, of Dennis; and two grandsons, Matthew Randall and his wife, Kendra, of Daniel Island, S.C., and Christopher Randall of New Haven, Conn. She also leaves many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 3055 Main St., Route 6A, Barnstable, MA 02630.

Alida Louise Dablain [Ostrander] '78 (1952-2004)
Born in Torrington, Conn., on Feb. 1, 1952, Alida Louise Dablain-named by her mother after a well-known movie star of that era-graduated from the School of Home Economics and Family Studies in 1978 and later received a Master's Degree in Special Education at Boston University. She worked for some years at King's School in New Britain and married Robert Ostrander in 1992. Two years later their only daughter was born with some mild cerebral palsy and was frail in her early years. Her mother became very devoted to the care of this daughter. Shortly before her death from cancer, however, as the daughter was growing up, Alida was making plans to go back to work in education. A sister who also graduated from UCONN (in Sociology in 1972) notes, "Alida's "daughter is her greatest success!" The family lived in Litchfield, Connecticut. Alida is survived by her husband and daughter and by two brothers, Mark A. Dablain (spouse Yumiko Ono), and Damien A. Dablain (spouse Lisa), two sisters, Marcy A. Dablain, and Rhonda LoBrutto (spouse Richard). Alida also has four nephews-Rick LoBrutto, Chikara Dablain, Colin and Nathan Dablain. Her mother, Elsie L. Dablain is also still living.

Katherine (Dettenborn ) Farnell '34 (1912-2007)
Katherine Dorothy Katherine Dorothy Farnell, wife of the late Denis F. Farnell passed away on Saturday (May 26, 2007) in Plainfield, NJ after a brief illness. Born on September 7, 1912 in Hartford, she was the daughter of Charles and Katherine Dettenborn. Farnell graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1934. Prior to moving to Plainfield, NJ in 1998 after the death of her husband, she had lived in Middletown, East Hampton and Avon. She had been a high school teacher in Hartford and Avon where she retired in 1968. She is survived by two sons, Alan S. Farnell and his wife Roberta with two grandsons, Thomas and Jeffery of Oakbrook, IL, and Donald B. Farnell and his wife Gail with a granddaughter, Lauren of Gillette, NJ. Like her husband before her, she has donated her body to science for medical research.

Mary (Crighton) Ferry '49 (1927-2007)
Mary Crighton Ferry, 80, passed away on Friday, (December 28, 2007). She was the loving wife of the late Roy W. Ferry. Born October 24, 1927 in Winsted, Conn., she was the daughter of the late David Muir Crighton and Minnie Welch (Edmond) Crighton. She was a life long resident of Winsted. Mary graduated from Gilbert School, class of 1945. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Art and Textiles from the University of Connecticut, class of 1949. She was employed as a State Social Worker at Children's Village in Hartford. She volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Drives. Mary was a member of the Emblem Club "Elks," and the Republican Town Committee. She enjoyed touring the USA with her husband and camping at Crown Point Campground in Vermont. Mary was also an avid reader, bird watcher and was very proud of her Scotch heritage. She is survived by her stepson, Paul Ferry and his wife Deborah of Torrington and their two sons, Michael and Brian; her niece, Adele Groppo Kellogg of Winsted; grandnephew, Christopher D. Kellogg and his wife Dee and great nephew, Daniel Kellogg, all of Ringoes, NJ. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 2, at Montano-Shea Funeral Home, 922 Main St., Winsted at 2 p.m. Burial will be held at Forest View Cemetery, Winsted. William Francis Fish '01 (1951-2007)
William Francis Fish, Sr., 56, of Forest Glen Circle, Middletown, husband of Marianne (Campion) Fish, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, (August 15, 2007) at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA. Born in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late William Arthur and Margaret Mary (O'Brien) Fish. He lived in Middletown since 2005, moving from Southington and was employed by the Department of Economic and Community Development for 29 years with the State of Connecticut. He was an active member of Victory Tabernacle Church and served on the board of the "Will Santa Find Me?" Foundation. He was an avid golfer but always first in his heart was his love for his wife and children. Besides his wife he is survived by one son, William F. Fish, Jr. and his wife Talin of Quincy, MA; two daughters, Margaret and Lindsay Fish, both of Southington; two brothers, John Fish of Cranston, RI and Peter Fish of Rensselaer, IN; three sisters, Margaret Baker of Cranston, RI, Cecelia DiChiara of Cranston, RI and Mary Nerbonne of Pawtucket, RI; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Carol Holstein. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18th at 10:30 a.m. at Victory Tabernacle Church, 191 Jackson Hill Road, Middlefield with the Rev. Peter Leal officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Jonathan Jared Florian '79 (1957-2007)
Jonathan Jared Florian, age 49, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Southington, died Monday (August 27, 2007), unexpectedly in San Diego. He was the son of Stella (Bobrowiecki) Florian and the late Jonathan B. Florian. Born October 7, 1957 in Southington, Jonathan graduated from Southington High School in 1975 and from the University of Connecticut in 1979. He then moved to California. He worked for General Atomics in San Diego and was known for his love of animals, especially cats, caring for many strays over the years. In addition to his mother, Stella, he leaves behind three brothers and two sisters and their spouses: Dewayne and Eddie Florian of Norwalk, Lorenda and Ty DiMeo of Southington, Dana and Darci Florian of Bristol, Melissa and Michael Robarge of Plantsville and Kyle and Laura Florian of Southington; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Deborah R. (Bailey) Fridrich '70 (1948-2007)
WESTFORD, Mass. -- Deborah Debbie (Bailey) Fridrich, 59, a Westford resident who was active in community organizations, died Tuesday, June 26, at Emerson Hospital in Concord. She was the beloved wife of John S. Fridrich, to whom she was married for 36 years. She was born in Bridgeport, Conn., on Jan. 8, 1948, a daughter of Sidney Bailey and Ellen (Buck) Bailey of New Milford, Conn. In her youth, she was an active member of the Brownies and the Girl Scouts. She was educated in Connecticut, graduating from Trumbull High School in 1966 and the University of Connecticut in 1970. Mrs. Fridrich was an administrative assistant at the Roudenbush Community Center in Westford for many years and was very active in her community. She volunteered at the J.V. Fletcher Library and held several positions in the Westford Garden Club. She had a passion for music, playing the piano, the organ and the violin and also enjoyed the I Hope You Dance program for cancer survivors. She loved the outdoors, spending time bicycling and cross-country skiing. Mrs. Fridrich enjoyed her time summering with family at Lake Winnipesaukee and Cape Cod and traveling with her family to Alaska and the Mediterranean. Besides her parents and husband, she is survived by a son, Cary Fridrich of Cambridge; a grandson, Evan Fridrich of Hudson, N.H.; a brother, Sid Bud Baile, Jr. of Southbury, Conn.; a sister, Joyce Yeomans of Woodbury, Conn.; a brother-in-law, Wayne Fridrich of Terryville, Conn.; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the mother of John Jay Fridrich, who died Feb. 23, 2005.

Janet Lynn (Arpin) Gagnon '79 (1957-2007)
FRANKLIN, Conn. - Janet Lynn (Arpin) Gagnon, 49, of Franklin, died on September 3, 2007 in Waterford following a lengthy illness. She was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1957, in Norwich to Claire and the late Joseph Arpin. Janet was raised in Baltic, CT, educated in the Sprague School System and graduated from the Norwich Free Academy in 1975. In 1979, Janet graduated from the University of Connecticut earning her bachelor degrees in early childhood development as well as interior design. Following her college years, she worked many years for the Anderson Supply Company in Franklin. With the birth of her children, she left her employment in order to raise Joshua, Sarah and Ethan at home. Years later, she took on a new professional career as an educator. For the past six years and until the time of her illness, she was a Teacher at St. Joseph School in Baltic. On May 3, 1980, she was united in marriage with Wallace Gagnon, Jr. by Fr. Edward Frigeault at the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Baltic. He survives her. In addition to devotion to her faith and family, she was a tireless contributor to her community. She was a Eucharistic Minister and a member of the Franklin Board of Education. Additionally, she constantly served on various committees that benefit children. Janet was an avid gardener when time permitted. In addition to her mother and children Janet leaves five siblings, Joseph Arpin, Jr. with his wife Marie of Canterbury, Raymond Arpin and his wife Sandi of Groton, Judith Joyner and her husband Milton of Franklin, David Arpin and his wife Dolores of Baltic and Lori Anderson of Virginia. There are also numerous nephews and nieces, all of whom Janet kept close to her heart. She will be forever remembered and sorely missed by the many whose lives and hearts she touched. Janet's family will receive friends on Thursday, September 6th, from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the Cummings - Gagne Funeral Home, 82 Cliff St., Norwich. Her Christian life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 67 West Town Street, Lebanon, CT on Friday, September 7th, at 11:00 AM. Marcia (Ruus) Gorham, '58 (1936 - 2007)
Old Lyme, Conn., Marcia Gorham, 70, of Victoria Lane, died Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at her residence after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Gorham was born on July, 25, 1936, in Houston, Tex., the daughter of Earl and Fern (Dille) Ruus. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut in 1958. She married Francis Wilbur Gorham Jr. on April 4, 1959, at the Villanova Chapel in Villanova, Pa. She was employed for many years at Gull Associates in Old Lyme. Marcia was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was an avid gardener and UConn Huskies basketball fan. She enjoyed bridge with "the ladies" - as much for the company as for the cards. Mrs. Gorham is survived by her loving husband; her two daughters, Catherine A. Gosian of Marshfield, Mass., and Darcy Chmielewski and her husband, Ken, of Old Lyme; her three sons, Francis Wilbur Gorham III and his wife, Heather, of East Syracuse, N.Y., Stephen F. Gorham of Niantic, and Kevin T. Gorham and his wife, Kristin, of South Boston, Mass.; her six granddaughters, Cristina and Ashlee Gorham, Melissa Gosian, and Jennifer, Melanie, and Katie Chmielewski. She was predeceased by her sister, Janet Burchfield. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 11 a.m. in Old Lyme Congregational Church. Interment will be private. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, July 8, 2007, from 5 until 7 p.m. in Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Beckwith Lane, Old Lyme. Katherine A. Gregory-Reiter '49 (1927- 2007)
Katherine (Gregory) Reiter, 80, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., passed away on Tuesday, (September 25, 2007) at her residence. She was a graduate of Bacon Academy Class of 1945 and also a graduate of UCONN. During the Korean War, she served in Germany for the U.S. Army, Special Services. She is survived by her daughter, Susan; one grandson; her brother, Robert Gregory; one nephew. Katherine was predeceased by her husband, Martin, her parents and a brother Paul Gregory. Services were held in California.

Mrs. Ethel (Maynard) Hall '45 (1923-2004)
HENNIKER, N.H. - Ethel Maynard Hall, 81, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at the Pleasant View Center in Concord after a long period of failing health. Calling hours will be held tomorrow from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Holt-Woodbury Funeral Home, Western Avenue, Henniker. Services will immediately follow at the funeral home. The Rev. Janet Heslam will officiate. Burial will be held privately on Tuesday in Southington, Conn. Memorial donations may be made to the Henniker Food Pantry, P.O. Box 55, Henniker 03242; or to the Congregational Church of Henniker, P.O. Box 625, Henniker 03242. She was born on May 13, 1923, in North Branford, Conn., the daughter of Arthur and Etta (McGregor) Maynard. She spent most of her life in Connecticut, vacationing in New Hampshire until moving permanently in 1988. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut and a master's degree from Southern Connecticut State College. She also continued to take courses in administration, education and clinical nutrition. She was a registered dietician for more than 50 years and a member of the American Dietetic Association. Mrs. Hall was employed by Southern New England Telephone in New Haven, Conn. She taught at the Independent Day School in Middlefield, Conn., where she also served as a master teacher. In 1973, she served as the outpatient dietician and the renal dietician at St. Raphael Hospital in New Haven, Conn. In 1979, she was promoted to assistant director of food service until her retirement in 1988. After retiring and her move to Henniker, she was an active member at the Congregational Church of Henniker. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed crafts, gardening and the outdoors. She was predeceased by her husband, William Hall Sr, in 1999. She is survived by a son, William Hall Jr., and his wife, Donna, and two grandchildren, Jason and Kaitlin.

Winifred (Werdelin) Hand '42 (1921-2007)
Winifred (Werdelin) Hand passed away at her home in Salmon Creek, California on Friday, (August 31, 2007) at the age of 86. She was born in New Britain, and grew up nearby in Portland. She is survived by her two sons Skip Hand and Gary Hand, both of Sebastopol, Calif., and her sister Norma Werdelin of Portland, Conn. She had a very strong and independent personality and amazingly was able to live on her own at home until very near the end of her life. Wini met her husband in college and they married in Connecticut in 1942. She was a loyal partner to her husband, Dr. Cadet Hand of the University of California's Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML), who passed away in November 2006. Wini and Cadet moved to California in 1946, and by the late 1960's they had become full-time residents of Salmon Creek in order to be near BML. Their self designed house had extra bedrooms to accommodate their numerous visiting friends and academic associates. Wini excelled as a chef and for years hosted many a guest. She had an artistic bent and used her skills in drawing and silk screen printing. For years she designed and printed all their many Christmas and note cards. She also enjoyed painting and ceramics. Wini was an expert seamstress, sewing and knitting clothes for herself and her family. She had a pronounced public spirit. She was one of the first volunteers at the then new Kaiser Hospital in Santa Rosa. Wini was actively involved in community affairs and regularly attended public meetings of various county boards and commissions such as those of the Bodega Bay Fire Protection District. She was known as a great supporter of the firefighters. She was deservedly proud of her leadership of the effort which created the new public water system for the village of Salmon Creek during the 1990's. Mrs. Virginia (Swift) Hart '44, (1923-2007)
Virginia (Swift) Hart, 84, passed away peacefully on Aug. 28, 2007, in Torrington of natural causes. She was the widow of Oliver Hart, who died in 1985. They met at the University of Connecticut in Storrs and were married in 1947. Mrs. Hart was born in New Haven, on June 13, 1923, to R. Marguerite (Gaylord) and Gordon Swift and grew up in Watertown, where her father was the superintendent of the Watertown School District. She graduated from the University of Connecticut at Storrs in 1944 and received her master's degree in nutrition at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio. She then worked for a short time as a dietitian at the University Hospital in Cleveland and at New Haven Hospital. Mrs. Hart dedicated her life to her family. She lived in West Cornwall until 1985 when she began to spend her winters in Winter Park, Fla., and her summers with her daughter, Cindy, in Torrington. Over the last few years, she made her home in Torrington with Cindy, Charley and Tory Harbach. She worked at Bierce's General Store in West Cornwall and at the Grand Union in Sharon after her children were grown. She enjoyed rug hooking, sewing and visiting her children, friends and relatives around the country. She is survived by her four children and five grandchildren: Richard and his wife, Wendy, and their daughters Abigail and Elizabeth of Amherst, N.H., Judy Andrews and her sons, Jonathan and Nicholas of Billings, Mont., Cindy Harbach, her husband Charley and their daughter Tory of Torrington; and Alan Hart and Janeil Ivie of Salt Lake City, Utah. She is also survived by her brother, John Swift and his wife, Francis, of Amherst, Va., and their children, Sandra Wolfe and Connie Knotts. She was predeceased by her sister, Peggy Swift, of San Francisco, Calif. Memorial services will be at the convenience of the family, in the spring of 2008. Sylvia (Hill) Lyman '43 (1921-2008)
WILLIMANTIC - Sylvia Hill Lyman, 86, wife of Edson H. Lyman, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008. The couple were married October 5, 1941 and recently celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary. She was born in Saugus, Massachusetts on May 26, 1921, the daughter of Wilbur S. and Eunice (Whittredge) Hill. She lived in Willimantic almost all of her life and was a graduate of Windham High School. She earned BS and MS degrees in home economics education at the University of Connecticut. She was a member of the faculty of Lyman Memorial High School in Lebanon, Windham High School and Windham Regional Technical School in Willimantic, retiring in 1972. A member of the First Congregational Church in Willimantic for 72 years, she served as president of the Ladies Society, and Mothers and Others Club of the church. She was the first woman to complete a full six year term as trustee of the church. She was a member of the Senior Choir and the English Handbell Choir. Active in Girl Scouting, Mrs. Lyman founded the first Girl Scout troop in Lebanon in 1943. She was also a leader for Girl Scout Troop 1 in Willimantic and camp cook for the Girl Scout camp in Eastford, CT. She was a past regent of Anne Wood Elderkin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Windham and Columbia Historical Societies, the Sphinx Temple Band Ladies and Radiant Chapter No. 11, Order of the Eastern Star. Besides her husband of Wallingford, she leaves a son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Charles E. Lyman and Valerie Livingston of Bethlehem, PA; two daughters and sons-in-laws, Ann Louise and Fawzi Almahdi of White Plains, New York and Beverly and Raymond "Duke" York of South Windham, Connecticut. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Nathan and Peter York and Jenine Almahdi; her brother, Charles A. Hill of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; a niece, nephew and cousins. Memorial services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chapel, Masonic Healthcare Center, 22 Masonic Ave., Wallingford, Connecticut and a 3:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 199 Valley St., Willimantic, CT 06226. Mabel (Emanuelson) McCarthy '39 (1919-2008)
Mabel (Emanuelson) McCarthy, 89, of Chester, CT., died Thursday (January 24, 2008), at Middlesex Hospital. She was the wife of the late Eugene E. McCarthy, Jr. who passed away in 1975. Born and raised in Deep River, she was the daughter of the late Karl J. & Ann C. (Magnuson) Emanuelson. Mabel was a graduate of Deep River High School and UConn, class of 1939. She went on to be a school teacher, first at Valley Regional and then for many years in Middletown at the Woodrow Wilson and Kegwin Middle Schools retiring in 1991. Mabel was an active church member and was the first woman allowed on the floor at Pratt & Whitney during World War II. She is survived by her children; Eugene E. McCarthy III of Moosup, David A. Mc Carthy of O'Fallon, IL., Kevin C. McCarthy of Chester, Nancy A. McCarthy of Long Beach, CA. and 6 grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at the United Church of Chester, 29 W. Bernice (Van Overstraeten) Miller '52 (1930-2007)
Manchester, CT., Bernice (Van Overstraeten) Miller, 76, of Manchester, beloved wife for 47 years of Daniel T. Miller Jr., passed away Sunday (October 14, 2007), at Manchester Memorial Hospital. She was born December 28, 1930 in Milford, daughter of the late John M. and Bertha (Soukup) Van Overstraeten and has been a resident of Manchester since 1961. Bernice was a graduate of the University of Connecticut Class of 1952 and a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, as well as being a 55-year member and Past President of the Manchester Area Alumni Club of Pi Beta Phi. Upon graduation she went to work for several years at the former G. Fox & Co. in downtown Hartford and then with the former Connecticut General Life Ins. Co. before raising her family. Mrs. Miller was an active member of South United Methodist Church in Manchester and had served the church as usher, she was on the Administrative Board and loved to work on the booths (Fudge and Penny Candy) during the United Methodist Woman's Annual Fair. In addition to her husband she is survived by three children and their spouses, Cynthia A. and James Reitano of Henrietta, NY, David T. and Sara Miller of Bedford, MA, and Nancy M. and Matthew Petersen of Manchester, her sister and brother-in-law Marie and Charles Skinner of Greensboro, NC, five grandchildren, Talia Miller, Kevin Reitano, Kayla Miller, Avi Miller, Ashley Reitano and two nephews, Alan Skinner and Richard Skinner. Funeral services will be held Thursday October 18, 2007 at 11 a.m. at the South United Methodist Church, 1226 Main St., Manchester. Burial will be in the East Cemetery. Melba (Twiss) Prout '36 (1913-2008)
Exeter, N.H., Melba Twiss Prout, 94, died Sunday, (April 6, 2008) at Riverwoods at Exeter, NH, where she had resided the past 13 years. Born November 26, 1913 in Hartford, the daughter of Ernest B. and Ethel M. (Florence) Twiss, she resided in Portland and Glastonbury for many years. Melba was a 1936 graduate of the University of Connecticut and was a member of Pi Beta Phi Connecticut Alpha Sorority. For many years she taught Home Economics in the Middletown school system. A lifetime member of the First Congregational Church of Portland, she was also a member of the Portland Garden Club and had been a 4-H Leader. The widow of Earle W. Prout Jr. who died in 1975, she is survived by two children, Robert E. Prout M.D. and his wife Susan of Naples, FL, and Nancy Prout Berndtson and her husband William of Lee, New Hampshire; seven grandchildren, Matthew, Rebecca and Andrew Prout, Jeffrey, Charlotte and Jason Berndtson, and Sara Nadeau; six great grandchildren, Catherine and Chase Berndtson, Jack and Eliza Noon, Noah and Joshua Prout; two sisters-in-law, Janet Prout and Jeanette Twiss; many nieces and nephews. Joyce Barbara (White) Schleicher '60 (1939-2004)
Joyce (White) Schleicher, 65, devoted wife of Richard A. Schleicher, died Monday (August 9, 2004) at her home in Lebanon, Conn., where she lived for the past 32 years. She was born in Hartford to the late Floyd V. White and Agnes (King) White. Besides her husband of nearly 44 years, she is survived by a daughter, Kim (Schleicher) Derechin and her husband Josh of Charleston, WV; a son, Randy J. Schleicher and his wife, Lisa of Durham; and three grandchildren, Zachary, Lucas and Maxwell. She is also survived by a sister, Jacqueline (White) Twomey and her husband Edward of Freeport, ME; two brothers-in-law, Roger Gagne of Portsmouth, NH, and Warren B. Schleicher of Lebanon and several nieces and nephews. Eight years ago, Joyce was predeceased by her beloved identical twin sister, Janice (White) Gagne of Hampton, NH. Mildred Florence Terbush M.A. '62 (1941-2003)
Mildred Florence Terbush, 62, of Yuba City, California died Nov. 4, 2003, at her residence. Born in [Bristol?] Bristle, Conn., she was a Yuba-Sutter resident for 29 years. She was the owner of a local catering service for 21 years. In addition, she was a seamstress, creating wedding dresses and stuffed animals to match outfits for children. She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a master's degree in home economics. Survivors include her husband of more than 39 years, Donald Terbush of Yuba City; two daughters, Tambre Berg of Placentia and Debra "Bear" Smith of Lubec, Texas; a son, William Terbush of Round Lake Beach, Ill.; a brother, Ernest A. Phillips of Connecticut; and four granddaughters. Contributions may be made to Yuba-Sutter Hospice or to the Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church. A memorial service is scheduled at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Cornerstone Evangelical Free Church, Yuba City. Arrangements are under the direction of Ullrey Memorial Chapel and Crematory.
